Amazon. Big monopoly or several million small ones?

Every time I think this issue is over it finds its way back into the news. Once again the Authors Guild and their Big 5 masters are screaming a word they just don’t seem to understand. Monopoly. They throw the word around with abandon. Monopoly: mo•nop•o•ly the exclusive possession or control of the supply or trade in a commodity or service. Via: Flickr (license) These articles always manage to work in the word Antitrust, yet they seem to have a hard time with its definition as […]

Whats going to happen next?

It’s said that when an industry is in disruption the rate of that disruption increases until the new norm is established. We’re seeing this in the publishing industry today. The foreseeable downsizing, merging and desperate attempts to maintain the status quo are already happening.  Under the old system the trade publishers had the upper hand. Now it seems to be the wholesalers and the author/publishers who have control over their pricing and discount. Authors who are contracted with the big publishers give up this […]

Via: Flickr             Not long ago my wife called me from the bookstore and asked if I wanted the latest book by one of my favorite authors. I said sure, this author had never disappointed me in the past and his books are prominent on the shelves of our home. He’s a New York Times bestselling author many times over […]

Via: Flickr As the world of self-publishing continues to grow and change, the term indie author is naturally evolving as well. Most would define the term in the simplest definition as possible; Indie Author: An author who produces and publishes their own work without the aid of a traditional publishing entity. But is it really that simple? Is […]

Barry Eisler debates Ewan Morrison.

Recently, Barry Eisler, Ewan Morrison, and a few others were invited to the Radio Litopia show The Naked Book to discuss their views on the current changes in the publishing world. The title of the show was “In The Land Of The E, The Glassy-Eyed Are King” The show was basically three against one in my opinion, but Barry held up well and shot Ewan down repeatedly. The more I listened, the more happy I was about my decision to self-publish. Mr. Morrison just couldn’t […]

Amazon and the Big Six – Part 4

I promised to give my thoughts on what this all means to indie authors. My answer is…it depends. Right now Amazon is extremely friendly to the self-publishing author. The royalty rates offered are over and above what anyone could ask for. The ease of publishing to the Kindle store cannot be matched. The market one can reach is world-wide. There’s no arguing any of this. To that extent we should all be eternally grateful to Jeff Bezos for giving us the opportunity. He has supplied […]

Just when you think you’re done with the government they tell you there’s more to do.  This time it’s on the county level. Once you’re done with the state and you’ve received your paperwork from them, it’s time to make a visit to your county government for more red tape. You’re actually doing two things; registering with the county and obtaining a tax certificate. Yes, it’s required. To do this you’ll need the certificate from the state, picture ID, your new business address (PO Box) […]
